CL:AIRE Technical Bulletin
CL:AIRE, a non-profit organization in the UK, published Technical Bulletin 20 (TB20): An Introduction to Natural Source Zone Depletion at LNAPL Sites. The document is short but concise, a bird-eye’s view on NSZD: describing key processes controlling NSZD rates, outlines methods to measure NSZD rates (mostly based on gas transport), summarizes the role on NSZD in the LNAPL life cycle, and includes a description of the most common challenges in measuring NSZD rates. Although the bulletin is nearly two years old, much of it remains current, including not only the game changing opportunities that NSZD has brought to LNAPL sites. And on the flip side, the challenges in measuring NSZD rates at sites covered by impervious surfaces (concrete or asphalt). This report is a meaningful addition to a long list of guideline documents that reflect the growing acceptance of NSZD throughout the globe: American Petroleum Industry (API) Guidance on NSZD, ITRC’s 2019 LNAPL Guidance Document, Australia’s CRC Care reports 45,46 and 47, and CONCAWE (a division of the European Petroleum Refiners Association.
